DISCOVER KNOWLEDGE

SheThink Different (The Unseen Spectrum) was founded by myself - Riri J. Gittins - as a way of spreading accurate research in women's healthcare and sociological/philosophical experiences. This is an area in research which has been massively underfunded and something needs to change. I encourage as much contribution as you can share on our chat boards but please be careful to only claim what you can cite! We also encourage you to share this site to keep the journey active :)

GIVE ME A READ

Why me?

Philosophy (BA), Psychology (MSc)

I was born as a cis-gendered female in the year 2000 in the UK (now identifying as unlabelled using any pronouns, but they/them is favoured). Growing up, I had many struggles which I later came to find were traits of Autism and ADHD, but my teachers continued to push it off as me being "weird" and saying I would "grow out of it". Still to this day, I have not grown out of it.

Due to my late diagnosis being in adulthood, I was severely bullied and spent most of my childhood and teen years wondering why I was so different to everyone else around me. I spiralled into a dark place of anxiety, depression, and shame. This lead me to abuse substances and land myself in even more traumatic situations.

I was firstly diagnosed with ADHD in 2019, and then I was diagnosed with a Personality Disorder prior to receiving my diagnosis of Autism. I was medicated heavily with sedatives and antipsychotics, all whilst my physical symptoms (frequent UTI's, hyper mobility, chronic rapid heart rate, seizures, migraines, and heavy irregular periods) and special needs were neglected.

In my mid-twenties, I am only just discovering the deep overlap in my symptoms with so many disorders and conditions, and I'm coming to realise how much of it has been created to replace this notion of "hysteria" and further control women. so I began my own research, and now I share it here, so you also have the option to be educated about your own bodies. I plan to further my research and education on the matter by applying to do a PhD which focuses on ADHD in women, or general feminist studies which could further the psychological field.

Music & Art

I am absolutely thrilled to share my passion for creating art that is deeply personal and meaningful! My primary medium? Music! The sound of music is inspired by incredible artists like Kiana Ledé, SZA, and Ariana Grande, but it’s my lyricism that truly shines. I draw inspiration from the poetic brilliance of Taylor Swift, Mitski, and Olivia'Brien, crafting songs that explore heartfelt themes. music serves as both a powerful political statement and a source of therapy for today’s neurodivergent women. If this resonates with you, don’t miss out—check out my work here: Riri James.
