If you are experiencing homelessness or are at risk of suddenly becoming homeless soon, there is support available. Firstly, you should be aware of what homelessness entails and what your rights are. You can find this information by reviewing the Homelessness Act 2002 on the government’s website. If you are struggling to understand information there are services available such as St Mungo’s who offer confidential support and advice to those at risk of becoming homeless; or Shelter - which is UK’s largest housing charity, gives information on housing rights, homelessness and state benefits.

The first point of reference for support, is to then go to the council for support, or to contact Citizen’s Advice - Your local Citizens’ Advice Bureau (CAB) provides free, confidential and independent advice, including advice on housing. The website has information in Welsh, Bengali, Chinese, Gujarati, Punjabi and Urdu, as well as English, and allows you to locate your nearest CAB.

There are charities that work directly with homeless individuals such as Homeless Link. Homeless Link is the national membership charity for organisations working directly with people who become homeless in England. It works to make services better and campaign for policy change that will help end homelessness. Or if you live specifically in London, Fieldlane works with families that are homeless in London.

Under current law you can approach any Homeless Persons Unit if it is unsafe for you to remain in your home due to domestic violence. The Council is obliged to offer you temporary accommodation while they carry out their assessment or give you a decision on your application on the day. Housing law states that, ‘It is not reasonable for a person to continue to occupy accommodation if it is probable that this will lead to domestic violence or other violence’. Violence means violence or threats of violence from another person, which are likely to be carried out. This website - Rights of Women: Guide to Domestic Violence and Homelessness - sets out a guide to your housing rights if you are experiencing domestic violence and are currently living with your abuser. It also looks at the legal options which are available if you can no longer stay in your home and need to find somewhere else to live. Similarly, if you have arrived in the UK to join a partner who is settled here, but have to leave your home because you fear or have experienced violence from your partner, this -Housing Rights Information England and Wales - applies to you.

If the council are unhelpful, as government support can be spotty, there are also shelters available. On this website - Shelter: Homelessness due to domestic violence - it gives information on when you have to leave your home because of threats, abuse or intimidation. There may be safe places you can go to, such as refuges and temporary housing from the council. It may also be possible to stay in your home and make it safer.

If you are facing homelessness and identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community then Stonewall Housing is know to provide housing advice to LGBT victim/survivors of domestic abuse across London.

If you have been a victim of human trafficking or have been affected by it, then you might benefit from contacting the modern slavery and exploitation line.

If you identify as a member of the LGBTQ+ community then you may benefit from the support available here. Galop’s free helpline is for LGBT+ people experiencing abuse or violence, including hate crime, domestic abuse, sexual violence or so-called “conversion therapy”.

When you call or use the web chat service, you will have up to 40 minutes to chat things through with one of our expert advisors. Please note that last calls will be shorter, lasting up to 25 minutes and are taken at 8pm Monday to Tuesday and 4:30pm Wednesday to Friday.

Our helpline is for LGBT+ people who have or are experiencing domestic abuse. We are also here for people supporting a survivor of domestic abuse; friends, families and those working with a survivor.

If you’ve experienced anti-LGBT+ violence, abuse or harassment, and need a safe space to talk, our helpline is here for you. You can talk to our helpline team about insults, intimidation, threats, online abuse or violence targeting you because of your sexual orientation or gender identity.

Sexual abuse, rape or sexual violence is when someone is forced, pressured or tricked into taking part in any kind of sexual activity with another person. It could be online or in person, and it can happen to anyone. Rape and sexual assault are types of sexual violence, as well as sexual harassment. If this is happening to you, or you are worried about someone else that might be experiencing this, then our trained Helpline Advisors are here for you. We can help you explore your options, understand your situation and discuss your next steps.

If you are currently experiencing abuse aimed at changing, altering, or ‘curing’ your LGBT+ identity, or think this will happen to you if you come out, our helpline is here for you. So-called “conversion therapy” can have a long-term impact on LGBT+ people. If this has happened to you in the past and you are still struggling with it, you can reach out to Galop’s support services.

If you are in search of therapy, there are lots of options available. In the first instance, it is advised that you contact your GP (doctor) to discuss your concerns as they might have other options that would be better suited to your needs. But if counselling is not an option through your GP, then using a directory such as the Counselling Directory or the UK & Ireland Counselling & Psychotherapy Directory can connect you with professional counselling support.

Music & Art

I am absolutely thrilled to share my passion for creating art that is deeply personal and meaningful! My primary medium? Music! The sound of music is inspired by incredible artists like Kiana Ledé, SZA, and Ariana Grande, but it’s my lyricism that truly shines. I draw inspiration from the poetic brilliance of Taylor Swift, Mitski, and Olivia'Brien, crafting songs that explore heartfelt themes. music serves as both a powerful political statement and a source of therapy for today’s neurodivergent women. If this resonates with you, don’t miss out—check out my work here: Riri James.

Sunshine DBT

If you're facing challenges with your mental health or seeking additional support, feel free to reach out to my DBT email for opportunities to an online Dialectical Behavior Therapy. We hold meetings every Thursday at 6 PM, lasting one hour, where we share how we've applied our skills throughout the week. You can access resources for the skills we learn through this link: Google Drive.
